It is the placement of implants or breast prosthesis to increase breast volume. It is important to understand that it does not increase the contour of the thorax measured in sizes such as 32, 34, 36 etc. but the cup measures in Colombia as A, B, C, D etc.
There are several approaches for the placement of prostheses. These can be placed periareolar approach, that is, by the lower edge of the areola; by inframammary incision in which the incision is located in the lower fold of the breast and, finally, axillary in which the prosthesis is inserted through the fold of the armpit. The periumbilical approach is described but requires inflatable prostheses in saline solution.
As for the plane in which the pocket is made where the prosthesis will be located, it can be retroglandular, that means exactly behind the breast; retropectoral or submuscular (behind the pectoral muscle) and finally retrofascial that places the prosthesis behind the gland but below the wrapping of the muscle called fascia.
The surgery lasts approximately one to two hours and usually they are done under general anesthesia. The pain is controllable with medication but usually the patients complain of congestion in the breasts that yields quickly .
